Step Into 305 AD

Time Walk is a Split-based company offering VR walking tours through Diocletian's Palace, the heart of Split's UNESCO-protected Old Town. We combine the depth of a guided walking tour with the wow factor of immersive virtual reality, letting our guests see the palace not as a ruin, but as it stood 1,700 years ago.

What We Do

A Time Walk experience lasts approximately 80 minutes and includes two carefully crafted virtual reality scenes – one at the Golden Gate (Porta Aurea) and one at the Peristyle, the ceremonial heart of the palace. Between them, your licensed local guide leads you through cobblestone streets, ancient cellars, and hidden corners that most visitors miss.

Guests use Meta Quest 3 headsets at two key locations. At the Golden Gate, you watch Roman soldiers march into formation. At the Peristyle, Emperor Diocletian himself steps forward to address his people – with Empress Prisca watching from the colonnade and the crowd chanting "AVE DIOCLETIANE" all around you.

The VR moments are intentionally short, intense, and unforgettable. Our guides build the historical narrative leading up to each scene, so when you put on the headset, every second lands.

Who's Behind Time Walk

Time Walk d.o.o. is a registered Croatian business founded in 2025. Our small team includes:

  • Licensed Croatian tour guides certified by the Croatian Ministry of Tourism, with expertise in Split's history and Roman heritage.
  • AR and VR developers who built our custom virtual reality scenes from the ground up, frame by frame.
  • 3D artists specialising in historical reconstruction — characters, costumes, architecture, and atmosphere all faithful to what the palace looked like in 305 AD.
  • Historians and consultants who verify every detail, from the colour of imperial purple to the inscriptions above the Golden Gate.

Why 305 AD

The year 305 AD marks the beginning of Diocletian's retirement to his palace in Split (then called Spalatum). It is the only year in history when the palace existed as a complete, freshly built imperial residence with Diocletian himself living inside it. This is the moment Time Walk recreates.

Diocletian had just voluntarily abdicated as Roman Emperor — the first ruler in Roman history to step down from power voluntarily. He spent his final years in Split, growing cabbages in his garden, before his death around 311 AD.

All Time Walk tours take place inside and around Diocletian's Palace in Split, Croatia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The palace covers the entire eastern half of Split's Old Town and remains one of the best-preserved Roman imperial residences in the world.

  • Diocletian's Cellars — one of the best-preserved Roman interiors in the world
